Internship/Work Experience

Not all degree programs require an internship experience. However, all students are encouraged to complete at least one internship or work experience related to their career interests. The UNL Career Services Office, faculty/staff, and clubs and organizations are great sources of information on internship and work opportunities. Weekly updates posted on Husker Hire Link (UNL Career Services information system), bulletin boards, and student email keep students up-to-date on opportunities. Many students also work on-campus in their home departments or areas related to their interests. These experiences are also invaluable to learning more about their academic disciplines.

Club/Organization Involvement

Two of the primary organizations in which students in the Department of Agricultural Economics are involved are the AEAC (Agricultural Economics/Agribusiness) Club and NAMA (National Agri-Marketing Association). Many of our majors are also involved in other clubs/organizations on campus. There are nearly 400 clubs/organizations UNL-wide and students can get information on any of them through the UNL Student Involvement Offices (the University has an office on each campus).
Involvement in organizations is a key part of the college experience--for leadership development, connecting with professionals in their fields, meeting students with similar interests, and becoming contributing members of campus and the community.

Undergraduate Research

Because the University of Nebraska is both a Land Grant and AAU Research University, students have outstanding opportunities to work with faculty who are doing cutting-edge research in their fields. Beginning their sophomore year, students can work with faculty to apply for research grants as part of the U-CARE Program. Students in the UNL Honors Program can apply for honors thesis research grants through the Institute of Agriculture and Natural Resources (IANR). Students also have the opportunity to do one-on-one research with faculty and can visit with their faculty advisers about their interest in research possibilities. RURALS: Review of Undergraduate Research in Agricultural and Life Sciences :
A faculty-refereed journal, hosted through the University of Nebraska Center for Agricultural Food and Industrial Organization, is devoted to the publication of high quality research by undergraduates worldwide in all research problem areas including, but not limited, to those described in the USDA, CSREES Manual of Classification of Agricultural and Forestry Research at http://cwf.uvm.edu/cris/revman/manvi_rp.htm. For more information, contact Dr. Azzeddine Azzam.

Industry/International Study Tours

These out-of-the-classroom opportunities are invaluable to learning about the global, corporate, environmental and business nature of the industry where our students will soon be leaders.
Each year, the Department sponsors a four-day Industry Tour over winter break. Past Industry tours have will included visits to Kansas City, MO; St. Louis, MO; and Decatur, IL. Students visited with professionals and tour facilities at companies such as Scoular, Archer Daniels Midland, Anheuser-Busch, Federal Reserve Bank, Purina Mills, and Pet Foods.
A number of International Study opportunities are available to UNL students through the College of Agricultural Sciences and Natural Resources and the UNL International Affairs Office. Scholarships are available to students to study or participate in study tours abroad. Students who have participated in international study recognize and value these experiences.
